Sunlight streamed in, waking Rob.

Rob hoped the day would bring useful knowledge with it. Not that his time in the Borderlands was useless. Rob just wasn’t certain what he needed to be doing. Having uncovered truths about the frost and the Spread, he believed he had a greater role in what the Borderlanders dealt with, though as an outsider, he was unwelcome.

Training might change that.

Rob had to hope he could find information, and hopefully understand his essence enough to protect him if they attacked again him.

When he stepped into the street, heading to Serena’s, her door opened, like she expected him to be there.

Her hair was braided and wrapped with golden silk, nearly the same color as her essence. A faint tracing of her pure essence flowed from her, though not enough to reveal her presence in the city. He suspected she intended to keep her essence controlled, so she didn’t draw too much attention. He’d seen what her essence looked like outside the Borderlands, though since she progressed, he couldn’t help but wonder how it would look if she simply allowed it to flow from her as she once had.

“Where were you yesterday?”

“Practicing,” Rob said, explaining what happened with Brandon and the others.

“Why would you risk yourself against them?”

He looked down the street. A pair of young Borderlanders wandered down the street, though both had pronounced essence flowing from them. They were both dragon touched. Rob didn’t need to see them use their essence in order to know them.

“I need to understand my ice essence to protect myself. I figured it might be helpful. Not only for me, but for them, especially if they have to deal with the ice king, or those with him.”

“I could’ve helped you. You didn’t need to train with them.”

“I’m not so sure. You would either hold back, or you wouldn’t and you’d burn through my ice essence. I will need to train with you, but I need to know how to defend myself against those from the Borderlands first.” He smiled at her. “Besides, I needed them to work with me. I wanted someone who would treat me like an enemy, not a friend.”

Serena took a deep breath, pushed her essence down, and she looked around the street. The Borderlanders were waking up and making their way through the city. Everyone who passed glanced at them, suspicion looming in their eyes, but less so than when they first arrived in the city. Several people pushed carts made from woven wood, and one of them approached, selling food that Rob happily bought for several. Boris wanted to make sure they had a way to purchase the food they needed, and had provided Rob and the others with plenty of coin. It wasn’t just food they needed, but supplies too, and because of Boris’s generosity, Rob could purchase whatever he needed while in the city.

“You can come with me to see what Boris has in mind. I don’t know his plans, though I suspect it’s going to be dangerous.
